Steps On How To Stop Automatic Windows Update | See Details Here

Windows Update in Windows 10 seem to offer the direct opposite of it’s function which is to improve performance and quality in Windows 10 is great in theory. The update sometimes gets messy and is one of the causes of a poor experience when it comes to Windows 10

Be that as it may, coupled with the fact that Microsoft has made it hard to stop their operating system from downloading automatically from the internet, then you’re now in a dilemma. Windows Update also might be eating up your valuable internet data and bandwidth, and that’s a big no-no if you have a limited internet service. You might be wondering as to how to turn off these updates – we’ve got you covered.

You just need to do a little bit of tinkering inside your computer settings to resolve this problem. We also did our research for you to have a guide to follow and to make things easier for you – with a screenshot of the most crucial steps, of course! Here’s how to stop Windows Update in Windows 10.

Disclaimer: Windows Update might be annoying, but they’re put there to resolve issues like UI problems, freezing, crashes and security risks. If you’re confident that you don’t need to Update Windows, then you can proceed with the guide. Otherwise, leave them on.

Get Notified Whenever there’s an Update

Sometimes you just want to be informed whenever your computer will download and install updates. You can easily turn on notifications before update by following these steps:

  • Open the Run app by pressing Windows Key + R or typing Run in the search bar.
  • Type in gpedit.msc

  • In the Group Policy Editor, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

  • Find the setting that reads ‘Configure Automatic Updates’ and double-click it
  • In the window that opens, click on ‘Enabled’, and a drop down should appear
  • Depending on your current Windows 10 build (version), you can either click on Option 1 – Notify for download and notify for install or 2 – Notify for download and auto install

  • Restart your computer
  • You’ve successfully turned on notifications before updates!

Using this method, Windows will let you know whenever you have a pending update and you can choose whether you want to push through with it or not.

Change Windows Settings to delay Updates

Maybe you just want to delay the Windows updates for now and you don’t want to be bothered for the next 7 days. It’s definitely possible with Windows 10 and these are the steps to do it:

  • Open your start menu and open your settings app (Gear Icon)

  • Navigate to Update and Security
  • In the Update settings, click on Advanced Options
  • Under the Advanced Options, look for Pause Updates

  • Turn it on
  • Enjoy 7 days without updates!

With this method, you won’t need to update to the latest Windows 10 build every time there’s an update for the next 7 days. The only downside is after the 7 days elapses, you are forced to download all of your pending updates before it can be paused again. It’s definitely a two-edged sword and you have to weigh whether this method would be what you really want or you want to shut off updates completely.

If you wish to shut down Windows Update completely, then continue reading. We have a couple of tricks up our sleeve.

Setup a Metered Connection

One of the ways to stop Windows Update from using up your internet bandwidth is to set up a metered connection. This is a feature that tells Windows to lower down the usage of your internet; hence it will stop updating your operating system. It’s the easiest and safest ways to stop updates so you can get on your browser without any lag or slowdown.

Before we begin, you should know that this method only works on Wifi networks and does not work with Ethernet (LAN) connections. If you’re using Wifi, then just follow these steps, we also added a screenshot of each procedure for you!

Here’s an outline of the steps:

  • Go to your start Menu and click on the Settings. Alternatively, you can press the keyboard combination Windows Key + I
  • Click on Network & Internet.

  • Click on Wifi on the left panel of the settings. You should get a list of available Wifi networks.
  • From the list of Wifi networks, select the Wifi network that you’re using right now.
  • Scroll down until you find the On-Off switch for metered connections. Turn it on.

  • Done!

This will stop Windows from updating only when you’re connected to that Wifi network. If you choose to connect to a different network, then Windows Update will still continue to work in the background.

Disable the Windows Update Service

If you want to go all in and permanently stop Windows Update from using your valuable resources, you can go into the Services Settings of your PC and disable Windows Update from there. It’s a fairly easy procedure but you’ll have to be a little meticulous about it.

  • Start things off by opening the Run app again
  • Type in services.msc
  • The list of Services on your PC should appear
  • Find and navigate to the Windows Update service

  • Double click on the Windows Update service to open its properties
  • Under the General tab, click the drop down on the Startup type

  • Select Disable and click on OK
  • Done!

What this method does is that it prevent Windows Update from starting up when you turn your computer on. If Windows Update doesn’t open together with your computer, then it will not download any updates! So if you’re using this method, you’ll be able to turn off updates permanently, or until you manually turn on Windows Update – either by accessing the services options again or opening the settings app and working with Windows Update there.

Just remember to turn it back on every once in a while. You wouldn’t want to be left out of all of those updates!
